Go hiking in the mountains 

And you don’t need to go that far. Our resident hiking enthusiasts at Arlyn suggest adding Whyte Lake and Lighthouse Park in West Van, and the Twin Falls and suspension bridge at Lynn Canyon Park in North Van to your local hiking to-do list. The three parks are ideal for a unwinding with a light hike or afternoon picnic.

If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, but don’t have vacation time, consider a day at a local spa or a weekend yoga retreat. Low on time or funds? Join an outdoor yoga class or stop by for a single treatment.

With direct boats departing from Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay, respectively, each weekend, it doesn’t take long to get miles away. Each destination is home to its own quiet brand of fun, from farm tours and markets to hikes, kayaking, cycling or perusing the local galleries. We checked out the now famous goat cheese farm on Salt Spring earlier this year, and haven’t had that much fun since a Grade school field trip.

Take a trip to Tofino 

The West Coast of Vancouver Island is a bit of a trek (about three hours on the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo and another three across the width of the island) but worth it if you have the time. The sprawling beaches are beautiful in the summertime and the setting for a different kind of unbridled beauty in the winter — when off-season rates may sweeten the deal.
